Protei-ITG IP Telephony Gateway
Protei IP Telephony Gateway provides cost-effective solution for toll-quality telephone voice and fax
transmission via packet switching networks such as the Internet. It transfers media streams and faxes over IP
networks, offering reliable transmission via the existing packet switching network. Gateway interacts with VoIP
networks in compliance with ITU-T H.323 v2 and SIP Recommendations.
The main purpose of the gateway is transformation of voice and fax data streams from PSTN into the form suitable
for transmission over networks with IP packet routing (encoding, silence suppressing, and packing voice streams
into RTP/UDP/IP packets) and vise versa. The gateway also carries out the following functions:
- Routing functions (gateway can translate PSTN address into IP termination address to work in the IP
telephony networks without gatekeeper);
- H.323 and SIP signaling support for interacting with IP telephony equipment;
- SS7 or DSS1 signaling towards PSTN;
- H.245 RTP/RTCP media packetization support;
- Fax T.38 support;
- Two main outgoing call processing algorithms:
- via IVR with an authorization by using DTMF (e.g. for prepaid card systems);
- direct calls without authorization (in this case subscriber could be identified using Caller ID)
- RADIUS is supported forconnection to billing systems
Protei IP-telephony gateway can support these two modes simultaneously. Choice of call processing algorithm is
performed on the basis of service access number.
The gateway may be used by service providers to offer IP telephony services over IP networks i.e. over the
Internet, as well as to transmit voice streams between telephone exchanges over packet networks.
Protei-ITG IP Telephony Gateway is fully compatible with Cisco Systems equipment in transmitting voice
streams (G.729 and G.711 voice codec support) and fax data (T.38 protocol).

Protei IP Telephony Gateway interacts with the network billing center using the RADUIS protocol. The billing
center accounts incoming and outgoing calls, the permitted conversation duration, access privileges, and
carries out transactions.
